The Hella East Bay Guide: Where to Eat, Drink, Play + Stay Beyond the Bay Bridge

Of course, such exodus to Oakland has brought about rising prices there as well, which means that city too is starting to leak its talent as industrious artists, makers, and entrepreneurs venture further afield in search of more accessible places to set up shop and residence. Today, Oakland’s cool factor has spread well beyond its borders, past Berkeley even, into parts of the East Bay once largely foreign to San Franciscans, who may now be surprised to find how much the likes of Livermore, Richmond, Lafayette, and Alameda have to offer. But don’t just take our word for it. Let these East Bay towns show you for themselves in our various guides below, where you can also dig deeper into Oakland’s many buzzy neighborhoods. This is by no means the completest, most end-all-be-all guide to the East Bay, but rather a still-exhaustive look at some of the East Bay’s best offerings, written largely by East Bay denizens. Make it an overnight escape with a stay at East Brother Light Station Bed & Breakfast. The Cardinals made a monumental move this week when they acquired superstar first baseman Paul Goldschmidt

The Cardinals made a monumental move this week when they acquired superstar first baseman Paul Goldschmidt from the Diamondbacks, but the Redbirds certainly aren’t done yet. Currently mired in their first three-year playoff drought since the late 1990s, the Cardinals are emphasizing the need for immediate improvement, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak revealed after the Goldschmidt trade (via Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch). With the Winter Meetings on the verge of beginning, Goold has the latest on where the 2019-minded Cards could attempt to upgrade next: As a Cardinals fan I would want them to extend Goldschmidt, Mikolas, Carp, and Ozuna than sign Harper and regret it. Jason Heyward did a lot less, and still got $180M with opt outs mostly based on his potential and age with excellent defense as his floor. Will be interesting to see if teams have learned. Yes, Harper is a very different player and circumstance, but teams pay a lot for potential, especially if they already have a MVP. Did the Cubs win a WS? Was it partially due to Heyward’s last minute speech? If you believe that it was then it was money well spend. Apples and Oranges IMO. Also, Heyw...

As President Donald Trump crusades against the U.S. tech industry’s reliance on Chinese goods and manufacturing, a new analysis from the trade group CompTIA shows that jobs in most of the states that Trump won in 2016, such as South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota and Alaska, could be at risk in a prolonged trade war with China. The report released Tuesday from CompTIA, which advocates for fair trade, outlines the state of play in the ongoing trade dispute and its impact on the tech industry following the Trump administration’s hike May 10 in tariffs, to 25 percent from 10 percent on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. In the latest round of tariffs, telecommunications equipment was added to the list of already impacted tech products, including semiconductors and design inputs. Such tariffs could pose obstacles for U.S. companies that rely on Chinese manufacturing plants to assemble their products. China retaliated May 13 by raising tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. exports, targeting hundreds of agricultural, mining and manufactured products, which go into effect June 1. So far, China has not yet placed tariffs on U.S. tech imports, but Robert Atkinson, founder and president of th...

Seok Kim, a postdoc in Professor Nicholas Fang’s lab, holds up a 3-D-printed porous substrate that could be used as a catalytic reactor to remove toxic gases in cars and power plants. Associate Professor Xuanhe Zhao and PhD candidate Hyunwoo Yuk use 3-D printing technologies to create complex 3-D structures. Here, a polymer scaffold ink is being printed on a silicon wafer to provide structural support for other ink materials with poorer printability during the 3-D printing process. This scaffold ink can be washed away after printing, leaving a complex 3-D structure made of hard-to-print materials. Each component of this three-piece assembly of MIT’s Building 10 dome was printed using a different commercial additive manufacturing process. The piece was modeled after an original design by Ely Sachs and Michael Cima after their invention of binder jet printing. Associate Professor John Hart speaks with graduate student David Griggs in front of his lab’s custom-built selective laser melting system. In the system, a laser is precisely scanned over metal powder, melting the powder to form a 3-D part layer by layer. 3-D-printed objects related to Professor John Hart’s research includin...

These 41 Products On Amazon Have 2,000+ Rave Reviews & Are Under $10

In these modern times of free shipping and express two-day delivery, it can be a challenge to refrain from clicking that “Add To Cart” button every time you happen across an awesome product. Even taking the most cursory glance at my bank account is a persuasive argument in favor of fiscal responsibility, which is why I’ve made a deal with myself: impulse buys are restricted to all the cool products on Amazon that are only $10 — everything else? It’s gotta sit in my shopping cart for at least 24 hours before I buy it. And while that might not sound like a lot of fun, it’s all about perspective. Would you prefer to take home a $30 shirt — or would you rather snag yourself a cast iron skillet, anti-chafing balm, and a toilet spray made with 100 percent real gold nano-particles, all for the same price? To me, the choice is simple. So whether you’re looking for hidden gems on Amazon to treat yourself, or you’re simply trying to reign in some frivolous spending habits, look no further: I’ve rounded up some of the most highly-rated products available that won’t break your bank account, even if you buy all of them. Not only does the...
