This Flashlight Is Powered by the Touch of Your Hand | Innovation

Here’s a little known fact: The human body, at any given moment, produces energy equivalent to a 100 watt light bulb. In that sense, we’re always wasting our energy—energy that can be used to, well, power a light bulb. It’s this line of thinking that led a 16 year old to invent the first flashlight powered entirely by body heat. Ann Makosinski’s “Hollow Flashlight” isn’t the only manually-powered light out there. But whereas other products generate energy with shaking or even hand cranking, her award-winning prototype shines the moment you pick it up. “I thought, why not body heat?” she told The Oregon Herald. “We have so much heat radiating out of us and it’s being wasted.” Not until recently did researchers look into ways to capture excess body heat as a means of powering devices like hearing aids and pacemakers. Four years ago, engineers in Sweden figured out a clever (and somewhat sneaky) way to siphon the biothermal energy of passengers at a central train station to heat nearby office buildings. Still, much of the challenge in developing these technologies has to do with the fact that electricity produc...

What the Amazon founder and CEO wants for his empire and himself, and what that means

What the Amazon founder and CEO wants for his empire and himself, and what that means for the rest of us. Where in the pantheon of American commercial titans does Jeffrey Bezos belong? Andrew Carnegie’s hearths forged the steel that became the skeleton of the railroad and the city. John D. Rockefeller refined 90 percent of American oil, which supplied the pre-electric nation with light. Bill Gates created a program that was considered a prerequisite for turning on a computer. At 55, Bezos has never dominated a major market as thoroughly as any of these forebears, and while he is presently the richest man on the planet, he has less wealth than Gates did at his zenith. Yet Rockefeller largely contented himself with oil wells, pump stations, and railcars; Gates’s fortune depended on an operating system. The scope of the empire the founder and CEO of Amazon has built is wider. Indeed, it is without precedent in the long history of American capitalism. Today, Bezos controls nearly 40 percent of all e-commerce in the United States. More product searches are conducted on Amazon than on Google, which has allowed Bezos to build an advertising business as valuable as the entirety of IBM. ...

This is the fifth in a series of posts called ‘The DAP days are over’. You

This is the fifth in a series of posts called ‘The DAP days are over’. You can find Part 1 here, Part 2 here, Part 3 here and Part 4 here. First, it was Apple and iPhones. Then Google and their Pixels. This year, it’s Samsung’s turn. In the last 3 years, all have removed the 3.5mm headphone socket from some (or all) of their smartphones. On wireless alternatives, Sony leads the pack with their Bluetooth WF and WM noise-cancelling models. Those of us not yet ready to make the switch to a Bluetooth headphone are forced into dongle hell where the smartphone-manufacturer-supplied adapters are 50c pieces that often sound worse than the previous generation smartphone’s 3.5mm output. For those of us who care about smartphone-centric audio quality, China’s iBasso are soon to release their ‘DC’ USB-C adapter that features separate AKM DAC and headphone amplifier chip/s. iBasso know that most smartphone manufacturer-supplied dongles are designed only to get the job done. Their ‘DC’ circuit is designed to sound better. With USB audio support enabled in the host device (Android only — check with your manufacturer) and the iBasso dongle connected to its USB-C port, the smartphone will send o...

Tis the season to do a lot of cooking, or at least watch a lot of

Tis the season to do a lot of cooking, or at least watch a lot of cooking shows and wish you too lived in a very large house with perfectly behaved children, as the TV chefs always seem to do. If you do want to do some cooking though, then a bit of baking hits the spot. You can get some done during the day as you juggle your other jobs and it makes the house warm and toasty too. Cooking with chocolate is always satisfying, not least because you can lick out the dishes as you go. And since the invention of the microwave, melting the chocolate no longer requires faffing about with bowls over simmering water, even the pros now use microwaves. You do need good chocolate though, with at least 70% cocoa solid and we’ve been impressed with Menier Chocolate. It’s made with UTZ certified – cocoa, which means it’s farmed sustainably and signed off by the recognised authority and it’s also vegetarians society approved and kosher. Antoine Brutus Menier founded the company that has his name 200 years ago, using the chocolate to coat the bitter-tasting pills he sold as a pharmacist. In 1830 he created the first mechanised mass production factory for cocoa powder in France and soon after...

Scientists create special phone to dial up chatty frogs in the wild

Ribbits in real time. Researchers ask themselves, “Why make so many nighttime pond visits when you can pick up a FrogPhone instead?” That’s how I imagine a FrogPhone would work, and I’m not too far from the reality. Researchers who study amphibians have figured out a way to phone into frog habitats using a special solar-powered device that really is called a FrogPhone. The FrogPhone comes from a collaboration between several Australian research institutions. It uses a cellular mobile data network to let scientists dial in on demand and listen to the sounds of frog calls. This can help researchers learn which animals are present in a certain area.  The waterproof, solar-powered gadget also sends text messages with water and air temperature and battery data. “The FrogPhone will help to drastically reduce the costs and risks involved in remote or high intensity surveys. Its use will also minimize potential negative impacts of human presence at survey sites,” said Australian Capital Territory and Region Frogwatch Program coordinator Anke Maria Hoefe, co-author of a paper on the device published this week in the British Ecological Society’s ...
