PCB maker Unitech saw its 2019 revenues surge 14.73% on year to a record high of NT$22.42 billion (US$749.89 million) on strong shipments of rigid-flex boards for AirPods 2, and stronger shipment momentum is expected to send its revenues hitting a new peak in 2020, according to industry sources.

Thanks to Apple gearing up to boost its share of the TWS (true wireless stereo) headsets market with AirPods, Unitech's revenue contribution ratio for rigid-flex boards shipments for the devices rose to over 50% in 2019, and the ratio may ramp up further in 2020 given the company's clear order visibility for AirPods 2 throughout at least the first half of the year, the sources said.

But Unitech has said that it will strive to boost rigid-flex board capacity utilization by removing manufacturing bottlenecks of its existing production lines, and will not set up new capacity unless orders from clients pick up significantly.

Unitech is expected to see its rigid-flex boards adopted by more TWS headsets brands due to the firm's relatively mature technology for the segment, despite AirPods Pro adopting the solution of SiP+flexible boards involving higher cost and assembly difficulty, the sources said.

Unitech has also landed sufficient orders for anylayer HDI boards for handset battery modules, tablets and notebooks to boost its capacity utilization in the first half of 2020, the sources added.

Mini LEDs and micro LEDs are expected to become improved backlighting solutions that can significantly enhance displays quality and create added value in the upcoming years.
